A BRIEF HISTORY OF IYS

The Salesians of Don Bosco had been one of the founding member congregations of Tangaza College right from the early times of the latter’s history. In 2002, as Tangaza College was expanding its scope, particularly with the construction of the new block - now known as the “Imani Block” - the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) saw an opportunity to plant their dream of the Institute for Youth Ministry at Tangaza College. As the new building was getting its finishing touches, under the leadership of a Salesian, Fr George Kocholickal, as the Principal of Tangaza, the SDBs, and FMAs formed a committee to work on the development of the Institute of Youth Ministry (IYM). By April 2003, when the IYM was launched in a youth ministry symposium held at the aula magna of Tangaza College, the committee had developed the curriculum and worked out the necessary permissions. In this way, the Institute of Youth Ministry (IYM) was born. The two congregations (SDB & FMA), driven by their love of the young people of Africa and their common heritage, which they refer to as the Salesian Spirit, began a unique form of apostolate within the university. In 2013, the Institute of Youth Ministry (IYM) changed its name to the Institute of Youth Studies (IYS). The new name of the institute was a culmination of the growth-oriented process of the Institute. In the spirit of the changing socio-economic context and the emergence of new job opportunities, the IYM broadened its scope. The Institute designed new programs to attract young people with ambitions to serve society in different capacities.
