This week on February 2, 2026, the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS), under the leadership of the Dean Dr. Cecilia Osyanju, had the privilege of celebrating the World Day for Consecrated Life.Â
In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day for women and men in consecrated life. This global celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day.
As a school, we recognise the contribution made by religious in the arts and social sciences and the impact this has on our society.
We began with a prayer from the Dean of Students Rev. Dr. Tony Amisah who is also IYS faculty, this was followed by a reflection by the University Chaplain Fr. Karau on what it really means to be consecrated and the call each one has by virtue of their baptism. He emphasised the importance of hearkening to the call of God in the places we are called to serve and encouraged the religious men and women faculty present to keep up the good work.
As a school we are cognisant of the contributions made by 22 sponsoring congregations now 24 after we recently received an additional 2. The beautiful charisms infused in the department is the glue that holds us together and shines in all we do making it into a beautiful tapestry that is the church. This includes our key SASS departments: IYS sponsored by the Salesians, ISC by the Dominicans, CLM by the Vincentians, and IST by the Combonis.
Coincidentally this being the month of Love, the school had an opportunity to pour out Love on these consecrated men and women from different congregations.Â
The HR Dr. Mercy Kibe spoke on the Role of religious men and women in the Arts and Social Sciences. The Dean and the HR felicitated the ones present followed by a brief sharing of refreshments.
